Chronicling Jim Carrey

When I was growing up, Jim Carrey was one of my favorite actors due to his over-the-top antics in movies like Dumb and Dumber, The Cable Guy and Ace Ventura. For years Carrey’s career was defined by his inimitable facial expressions and willingness to perform outrageous antics. At the turn of the millennium, however, Jim Carrey movies began to take a decisive turn, venturing into a more dramatic realm.

The first movie in this vein was The Truman Show. While I didn’t appreciate the satire and irony of this film at the time of its release, it has become one of my favorites. The same can be said of the 2004 film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Throughout the last decade Carrey has dabbled in comedy, but many of his most memorable recent films have a distinct sentimental feel—even the comedies.
